“Should this be static or interactive?” is one of the most common questions teams ask when scoping an infographic project. The honest answer is that the two formats serve different jobs, attract different studios, and have different cost profiles — so the question is less “which is better?” and more “which job am I trying to do?”
What each format is actually for
Static infographic — single argument, designed to be shared, embedded, screenshotted, printed. The reader’s job is to absorb a fixed narrative. Examples: a CNN editorial graphic, a research-report headline visualisation, a campaign launch piece.
Interactive data viz — multi-dimensional dataset, designed for the reader to explore. The reader’s job is to find their own answer in the data. Examples: a national election results explorer, a salary-benchmarking tool, a “compare your region to others” widget.
The two are not interchangeable. A static piece trying to be interactive ends up with awkward “see more” gestures and unclear navigation. An interactive piece trying to summarise to a single takeaway loses its reason to exist.
Three questions that decide it
- Is there a single takeaway, or many? If you can write a one-sentence headline that the piece exists to support, it’s a static brief. If different segments of your audience genuinely need different cuts of the data, it’s an interactive brief.
- Where will it live? Static work travels — into press articles, slides, social shares, printed reports. Interactive work lives at one URL on your own domain. If discovery and distribution matter more than depth, static wins.
- Will it be maintained? Interactive pieces have a lifespan — they need browser-compat updates, hosting, accessibility audits as standards shift, and content refreshes when the underlying data changes. Static pieces are forever-files. If you don’t have an ongoing maintenance budget, default to static.
Why the studios are different
Studios that produce great static infographic work are usually editorial-design-led. They think in narrative, hierarchy, and typography. The strongest among them have backgrounds in newspaper graphics or art-directed publishing.
Studios that produce great interactive data viz are technical-design hybrids. They have D3.js / Observable / SVG fluency, can engineer a responsive dataviz that works on a mobile screen and a desktop monitor, and think about progressive disclosure UX as much as visual aesthetic. The strongest among them are alumni of the New York Times graphics desk, the Pudding, or Bloomberg’s interactive team — or have similar lineage.
A studio that claims excellence in both is worth probing. The intersection exists, but it’s small.
Cost implications
A polished single-page static infographic typically lands at $3.5k–8.5k. The same dataset turned into an interactive web piece typically lands at $15k–60k — partly because the design surface is larger (mobile + desktop, multiple states), partly because there’s a build phase, and partly because hosting + maintenance handover takes real engineering time.
If your budget is below $15k and you genuinely have an interactive use case, you have two options: scope it down (a tabbed static piece can sometimes do most of what an interactive does), or wait until next budget cycle. Cheap interactive work tends to age badly and break in production.
